Nyuz

In the sign-off this evening, the moderator of a weekly program by members
of the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri on the local NPR
station said something like "And that's this week's program on nyuz about
the nooz."  Try as they might, the nyuz people are not going to reverse the
now-near-total loss of the palatal onset to -ew, -ue, -uCe vowel nuclei in
North American English -- no matter what they dew, uh, doo.

Not to be confused with the more recent development of fronted on-glides to
mid and high back round vowels as they participate in the centering movement
in USian dialects regardless of historical origin.
