Just as the OED does not include every term and phrase from the English
language and other languages, it also does not include every early
citation.  Beyond the earliest use they can find, they pick and choose a
small number of other citations that they think are illustrative of the
word's usage.  They probably intentionally avoid just repeating all the
citations from other historical dictionaries.
