Should be "esculentus"; must be the old-style s that looks nearly like a
lower-case f. (You can always tell the difference, unless badly
smudged, by the horizontal stroke, which is only on the left side of the
stem in the s and does not cross through it as in the f.) Presumably
"Hibiscus" was recognized as not being "Hibifcus" because of its
familiarity...
