With this in mind, and even without, 'researches' implies to me separate
forays.  George Thompson's research into, "Feathers without much
chicken," plus George Thompson's research into, "Coniack," comprise two
of George Thompson's researches.

Not the output of researching, but research activity.  That's at least
how it seems to me.

FWIW, I don't have this one, but I like the way it feels :)
