Sorry if bringing this up again is getting annoying, but I was just
realizing as I read Donald's and Anne's posts that I have heard the "across
the street and diagonal a bit" usage also.  Not just at an intersection, but
maybe in the middle of the block.  It never occured to me until all this
that it was a "strange" usage because it did not involve corners at all.
That would be semantic extension at work, I suppose.
