OED uses this exact citation as the first one for "rocambole." OED spells it "rockamboy," but my copy (PINKERTON'S VOYAGES) is clearly "rockhamboy." That's why my search didn't find the same cite! OK, now to that four-volume tome on the city of Magyars...
