Bow-tie

Lately I've been hearing Chevrolet commercials with the line "America
loves the bow-tie" and "depend(?) on the bow-tie" with a reference to the
Chevrolet trade-mark. As someone who wears bow-ties now and again, the
Chevrolet logo looks more like and "anti-bow-tie" with a huge knot and
very small wings or whatever one calls the parts of a bow-tie.

Is Chevrolet commonly referred to as "the bow-tie" in car or car-racing
circles? Or, is this a example of an advertiser creating both a nick-name
and the impression that it is in common use among those who know about
such things?
