Funny, I've always thought "to spend a penny" was a Britishism.
I'm pretty sure it was listed in a glossary of British English that I
bought a few years ago (but I'll look that up tonight).
How interesting to find out that it's used in Vermont! My father's
relatives in Danby never used it, but maybe that's because they
weren't upper-crusty, latrine-paying types.
