I wonder whether formulaic  expressions like these that have to be repeated
many times, perhaps in slightly distracting circumstances, aren't
particualrly susceptible to odd deformations.  There is an awkward
angularity to "Can I help whoever's next" that almost invites a stutter or
some kind.
