   This was brought up on this list recently, by either George Thompson or Judge Crater.

   8 January 1911, NEW YORK TIMES, pg. 16:
   "Life is just one damn thing after another," wrote F. Percy Radcliffe, a real estate broker of 9 Harriman Avenue, Jamaica, Queens Borough, before he sent a bullet into his heart early yesterday morning or late Friday night.

(He probably coined the phrase, and this probably received bigger play in the tabloids.  The entire story is worth reading.  He cautioned his wife not to be sad, and not to wear black.  It seems that another broker was seeking him out, and he possibly would have received the money he needed, had he not decided to take his life--ed.)
