Greetings from Lhasa...There was a 97-km drive from the airport, and my Tibetan tour guide pointed out NOTHING. Clearly, she's practicing for a job in the Ukraine.
SICHUAN CUISINE (CONTINUED)--The hotel I stayed at last night in Sichuan (Minshan Hotel) was four stars, and had several restaurants. But even those rarely had English language menus. I didn't get to walk around the city much (I saw a "Top Flight Pizza" near the hotel), but my guess is that I wouldn't have found many English language menus of Sichuan dishes. Sorry...I asked the woman at the hotel's Business Centre what Sichuan dishes she liked best, and she said "hot pot." Great--the one thing I couldn't get in Mongolia!
TIBETAN NAMES--I have the article with me now. It's the CHINA DAILY, 17 September 2002, pg. 3:
_Names Proclaim Tibetan aims_
_Reflecting a strong sense of contentment_
(It's by the Xinhua news service. This newspaper doesn't seem to advertise a web site. If you ANS-ers can't get the article somewhere on the web and want it, I'll start typing it--ed.)
TIBETAN MENU--I ate at the Lhasa Snowland Restaurant just now. Great vegetable momos! Cheap, too! The restaurant has a nice menu of standard Chinese and Indian dishes, but I'll copy the 25 Tibetan dishes from the menu:
