The 9-22-02 NEW YORK TIMES has a story about "lox." From www.nytimes.com:

Who's to say Jolson didn't rattle off a ditty about cream cheese, lox and bagels in a winning fit of commercial imagination?

Andrew F. Smith, editor in chief of the forthcoming Oxford Encyclopedia of American Food and Drink, has a more primal hypothesis: "Fast food," he said. "It's easy. It's good."

(I posted here the earliest citation for "bagels and lox." No one spoke to me, as usual...OXFORD ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN FOOD AND DRINK? Wasn't the "AND DRINK" lopped off long ago? Can't the TIMES get anything right? Will there be a correction?--ed.)
