First syllable? There are two syllables in 'garage'? Aint it /gradzh/
(adopting the /dzh/ spelling of the affricate used so far in this
discussion)?

The Brits go the whole hog on anglicizing it: they stress the first
syllable, too:
' g ae r I dZ
rhyming with "carriage".
