Here's a slight antedating of the common sense of "skyscraper," from
searching ProQuest Historical Newspapers:


skyscraper (OED, 4., 1888 [30 Dec.])

1888 _N.Y. Times_ 13 June 4  In external appearance THE TIMES Building
will present a pleasing contrast to the red walls of its next-door
neighbor, the big Potter Building.  The new sky scraper will be white.
