PaperofRecord.com has THE SPORTING NEWS from 1886, then from 1938. TSN
has been a mess for me to read all these many years. There is no index, the
print is tiny, and the microfilms are nealy illegible.
Gerald Cohen may forward this information to a 19th century baseball
group. If everybody complains, maybe more years will be added.

31 May 1886, THE SPORTING NEWS, pg. 5, col. 4:
The Boston fans explain the poor playing of their nine so far by saying
that Radbourne does not get effective until June, while Ruffington has had a
lame shoulder.

21 June 1886, THE SPORTING NEWS, pg. 5, col. 4:
The style in which Hogan of the Leavenworth team fans out the sluggers of
the Western League is greatly admired by lovers of the game.
