"Hummingbird Cake" is not in John Mariani's ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN FOOD
AND DRINK (1999). It's widely mentioned that it was featured in the February
1978 SOUTHERN LIVING, but that wasn't the first citation.

Hi Wendy. I can help you out with the "Hummingbird Cake". I do not think
this cake is Australian. I am a Southerner and this cake has been a favorite in
most Southern homes for many generations. It is also known as a"Granny Cake"
because everyone's Southern Granny used to make it for special days and as a
"Dr. Bird Cake". Do not ask about the latter, because Ihaven't a clue. The
Hummingbird Cake and the Dr. Bird Cake use cinnamon and cream cheese frosting.
The Granny cake has nutmeg and cloves instead of the cinnamon, pecans are in the
cake batter and no frosting is used: just dust the cake with powered sugar
over a paper doily.

It is called a Doctor Bird cake in Jamaica, because there in Jamaica, humming
birds are called Dr. Birds.

(SUMMER) HUMMER

John Mariani mentions this drink, and it's just possible that he's right
and it's from Detroit. I have more database work to do on this and the
previous item. Ancestry.com has no newspaper from Detroit.
The first citation below is an August question to "master bartender" Dale
DeGroff--who doesn't explain the source.

The drinker city: Detroiters are credited with inventing three drinks: The
Hummer (ice cream, rum and Kahlua); the Bullshot (vodka, bouillon, ice cubes, a
wedge of lemon and a dash of a special concoction of Worcestershire, Tabasco,
Angostura bitters and celery salt), and Cold Duck, a combination of dry
California burgundy and New York State champagne.By Bill McGraw
