Well, there was also a nice tribute two weeks ago by Merryl Maleska
Wilbur to her father, Eugene Maleska, a lifetime logophile and
crossword puzzle author, who served as editor of the Times puzzle
page from 1977 to his death in 1993. In addition to his other claims
to fame (including many many crossword books), Maleska was the
principal of the Edward W. Stitt Junior High School (a.k.a. JHS 164)
on Edgecomb Avenue in Harlem, in the shadow of the old Polo Grounds,
when I attended in 1956-57. I for one don't begrudge him a day of
belated glory in the On Language column.
