I don't have a copy here to check against my memory, but there is a glossary entitled "The Parlance of Hip" in Mezz Mezzrow's book, Really the Blues (1946). As I recall, there is a definition of "hippie" that indicates a sort of wannabe, someone who is trying to be hip but doesn't quite make it. --
