Here's an antedating of the modern sense of "stewardess," from a New York
Times Historical search:
stewardess (OED, c., 1931)
1930 _N.Y. Times_ 20 July SM3 There is Miss Inez Keller, stewardess, or
rather traveling hostess. The Boeing system has solved the problem of
looking after the passengers by putting girls on all the liners.
