I think we were prescient in "America in So Many Words" (Houghton Mifflin 
1997), because at the time the earliest known citation was 1941. But we said: 
"The exact date has yet to be determined; the word makes a matter-of-fact 
appearance in a 1941 issue of Reader's Digest, but being derived from 
long-established [1920s] teenage, it must have been around at least a few years earlier." How
