HDAS/OED have a remarkably early 1902/03 citation for the word "movie"
(dated 1902 by HDAS, dated 1903 by OED). It is taken from an
advertisement on the reverse of the title page of a book. This is so much
earlier than anything else I can find that I wonder whether it is an error
of some sort. I am presently attempting to verify the source.
Below is a 1911 citation that is the second earliest that has been found
for "movie" as far as I know. If the 1902/03 citation proves to be
erroneous, this would become the earliest.
1911 _Wash. Post_ 1 Aug. 6 I learned how to bake stuffed tomatoes at the
'movies' last night.
