Marc:  Target, goal. Guide-mark, bearing. Marcanna a thogail, to take 
bearings.
Limiting mark. Marc an la/in (mhara), high-water mark.  

Tóin: bottom, lowest part, underside, bottom. Bed of sea or river. 
Ar thoin an locha, at the bottom of the lake.

Toin can also mean your ass, as in pog mo thoin (kiss my ass.) The motto of 
the NY Irish. (To this day...)

Twain targeted "asses" all his life. Especially pompous ones. Dudish swells 
who come down to the saol lom to watch the poor at play and write about it...as 
if they knew something.

Twain was never a dude. He was a secret-son of County Antrim. 

A "marc" can also be the object of a con man's desire. As in "a target..."

The Irish stole all their words from the English. Or the Germans. Ask the 
OED-ville Anglo-Saxon Dead Rabbit Gang.    

That's how the tongue of Irish became
the first literate language in Europe (5th-6th C. CE) after Latin and Greek. 



By the 19th century Irish had been reduced to a penalized language of 
illiterates, the notes of a blind piper's lament. Or the shredded e-mails of a 
Brooklyn born ex-Dodger fan.
