I believe it was a case of love at first phoneme (sound) when the English 
noun "Rat," as in the rodent, and the Irish past participle "Raite" met in 
someone's gob...
( as in "Everyone back East knows Whitey Bulger uttered, spoke, expressed, 
stated, alleged, gave his opinion, and reported everybody and their 
grandmother's first cousin to the FBI) of the verb ABAR, to speak, state, allege, 
REPORT...  

Raite. is pronounced somewhere between rat and ratcha. It is also the Vn. So 
it implies as well "the act of" "squealing."
