TANGELO

OED and Merriam-Webster have 1904 for "tangelo."

18 January 1903, LOS ANGELES TIMES, pg. D8:
_INVENTING FRUITS._
_Work of a New Government Labo-_
_ratory Under the Agricultural_
_Department--Cross Between Tan-_
_gerine and Pomelo._
By John Elfreth Watkins, Jr.
(SPECIAL CORRESPONDENCE OF THE TIMES._
WASHINGTON, Jan. 12.--The invention of brand-new fruits and vegetables is the principal work to be done in the Laboratory of Plant Breeding, just organized under the Department of Agriculture. Dr. Herbert Webber, who has been put in charge, has already succeeded in in creating several distinct novelties in collaboration with Walter T. Swingle.

"Tangelo" is the name given to this new species. It was derived from the two words, "tangerine " and "pomelo," which latter is the true name of the grape fruit. The grape fruit was used as the mother parent, the tangerine as the father. But the "tangelo"--the offspring of this odd experiment in plant matrimony--is neither a tangerine, nor a pomelo. It is a distinct and new species--quite as distinct from either parent as is the lime or lemon.

NYU AND PROQUEST

O.T.: NYU won't let non-NYU students get the Dow Jones news database anymore. Thanks a lot.

I was at a Dell computer, typed "tangelo" in the ProQuest database, and got this:

But you can't open up the articles to read them on a Dell!
So, I switched to an iMAC, typed in "tangelo," and got this:

1.
      TANGELO, NEW HYBRID FRUIT.
FREDERIC J. HASKIN.. Los Angeles Times (1886-Current File). Los Angeles, Calif.: Jul 8, 1918. p. I3 (1 page)

WHERE DID THE ARTICLES GO? One article for "tangelo"?
I typed in the author and title of this 1903 article, and it came up on the iMAC.
   But what's going on here??
