Further support for MQ's assertion comes from a footnote in Brian
Gardner's _Mafeking: A Victorian Legend_ (New York: Harcourt, Brace &
World, 1966):
"Baden-Powell said that the name should be pronounced to rhyme with
'maiden and noel'." (p. 18, n. 3) Unfortunately no source is cited.
