Indeed. It is in fact that "motto" that really got my goat.
In any case, I'm happy to see I've opened a linguistic can of worms. Now a
colleague has sent me the entire text of Trudgill's article, and I'll be
happy to send it on in turn to interested others--copyright(ed) or not.
