"slippery slope"

        Not the kind of slippery slope that we're talking about.  This seems to be the only use of "slippery" in Pilgrim's Progress:

        >>Now they began to go down the Hill into the Valley of Humiliation. It was a steep Hill, and the way was slippery; but they were very careful, so they got down pretty well. <<

A long-shot guess:  could "slippery slope" be in "Pilgrim's Progress",
perhaps the slippery slope leading down into the Slough of Despair?
