   I just noticed that the very end of the "Tin Pan Alley" article has "R. McC."  This is Roy Larcom McCardell, a frequent contributor to THE WORLD.
   To illustrate how bad etymological things have been before these databases: OED credits the following 1903 McCardell book for coining "club sandwich" and "chow mein."  His 1904 book on show girls allegedly coined "wisenheimer" and "kike."
