Many thanks for your researches. Yes, "barefaced" and "baldfaced" as
standalone terms are very much older than the compound forms with
"lie". Your examples from 1961 onwards are valuable indications of
the rise of "baldfaced lie" as the alternative form to the older
"barefaced" version.
