   OED and Merriam-Webster have 1882 for "rainbow trout," a California fish.
   The American Periodical Series includes FOREST AND STREAM, and on 16 March 1882, pg. 133, there is a story titled "The Rainbow Trout," discussing a date of 1879.

   22 July 1880, FOREST AND STREAM, pg. 489 (start; pg. 490?):
   California mountain trout, rainbow trout, _salmo trideus_, two days old.
