FARP--Not something associated with beans. From the WALL STREET JOURNAL, 25
March 2003, pg. 1, col. 5: "The Marine helicopter pilots call it a
FARP--short for forward arming and refueling point."

WILLIAM SAFIRE MENTIONED IN NEW YORK PRESS--NEW YORK PRESS (www.nypress.com)
has been running on auto-pilot for some time now. It was sold recently and
has gotten a little different (THE STRAIGHT DOPE has been continued), but not
better. This weeks lead feature, "50 MOST LOATHSOME NEW YORKERS," is just an
awful piece of filler--and it's the leader story. William Safire comes in at
number 10--doesn't he live in West Virginia, just outside DC? I've said bad
things about him, but this is just mean: "At an age when he should be
concentrating on keeping his hospital johnny tied and making sure the
pancreatic cancer patient on the other side of the room doesn't steal his
Jell-O, Safire is somehow still privy to space in the world's most
influential newspaper to vent his paranoid ravings about world events."

FLAGEL--I've shown the 1999 trademark here before, but this week's VILLAGE
VOICE says it was invented earlier than that, in Brooklyn (1993?):
