I don't know what the professional first-citers will come up with,
and I can't track it myself because my feeble resources don't
distinguish between "die-in" and the ubiquitous and irrelevant "die
in", but my impression is that this has been associated for some time
with ACT-UP and other demonstrations to protest insufficient funding
for AIDS research.  I can't recall whether there were "die-in"
demonstrations during the Vietnam War era.
