Axis of Taxes & Death by Taxes

Both New York State and New York City have huge holes in their budget.
Not surprisingly, there's talk about raising taxes (again).
The NEW YORK POST is against this and has used several slogans that can be
seen in today's newspaper (Friday, May 2).

AXIS OF TAXES--Another "Axis of Evil" variation. (See "Axis of Weasel.")
The "axis" is city-state-federal. "Axis of Taxes" is on Page 29, but has
been seen every other day or so in the past few weeks.

DEATH BY TAXES--Another "Death by Chocolate" variation. The editorial on
Page 30 is "New York's Death By Taxes." There are Google Group hits to the
early 1990s, and "death by taxes" may be much older.

(OT: The special interest groups have been flooding the airwaves with
commercials, urging you to write to Albany and save grandma. My favorite ad
has an I've-fallen-and-can't-get-up grandma saying how much she relies on her
health services, now in danger of being cut. It's grandma's lifeline. To
save grandma, all that's needed is to "cut corporate loopholes" and "ask our
wealthiest citizens to pay a little more." Surely, a tough choice: corporate
loopholes or grandma?--ed.)
