"Old Glory" Query

According to Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, sea captain William Driver
was the first to refer to the American flag as "Old Glory" (in 1831 after
he had brought the Bounty mutineers back from Pitcairn Island). Some
references on the Web give different accounts of Driver and the flag,
often referring to an 1824 incident. The OED's earliest citation for "Old
Glory" is by Driver in 1862. Can anyone point me to any authoritative
sources (the earlier the better) discussing Driver's coinage of "Old
Glory"?
