For some odd reason I remember a scene in an episode of Family Ties (with Michael Fox, ran from about 1982-89?) in which Nick is talking about some greasy spoon where "everything tastes like chicken, except the chicken." (Why on earth do I remember that?) I also remember the phrase from much earlier than 1991.

Did the late Erma Bombeck start this catchphrase?

Abstract:
ERMA BOMBECK writes like, sounds like and, as she admits, looks like the Arizona housewife she is. She prattles about her kids and her fastidious husband and her disinclination to appear in a bathing suit in public, just like the rest of us.
