Here's one that always causes a rukus. My mom made it and
took it to one of her club meetings, everyone thought it was
a riot. Most weren't sure if they should eat it or not. :)
It's gross looking, but it tastes great. Another gal made
it, left it on her kitchen table and her hubby threw it out
and yelled at her for leaving the cat's box on the table,
that's how real looking it is.

1 SPICE or GERMAN CHOCOLATE CAKE MIX
     1 WHITE CAKE MIX

Prepare cake mixes and bake according to directions (any
     size pans).

Prepare pudding mix and chill until ready to assemble.

Crumble white sandwich cookies in small batches in blender,
they tend to stick, so scrape often. Set aside all but about
     1/4 cup.

To the 1/4 cup cookie crumbs, add a few drops green food
coloring and mix using a fork or shake in a jar.

When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble into a
large bowl. Toss with half the remaining white cookie crumbs
and the chilled pudding. You probably won't need all of the
pudding, mix with the cake and "feel" it, you don't want it
     soggy, just moist; gently combine.

Line new, clean kitty litter box. Put mixture into litter
     box.

Put three unwrapped Tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish
and heat until soft and pliable. Shape ends so they are no
longer blunt, curving slightly. Repeat with 3 more Tootsie
     rolls and bury in mixture.

Sprinkle the other half of cookie crumbs over top. Scatter
the green cookie crumbs lightly over the top, this is
supposed to look like the chlorophyll in kitty litter.

Heat remaining Tootsie Rolls, 3 at a time in the microwave
until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake and
sprinkle with cookie crumbs. This is my addition--only
spread 5 of the remaining Tootsie Rolls over the top; take
one and heat until pliable, hang it over the side of the
kitty litter box; sprinkling it lightly with cookie crumbs.

Place the box on a newspaper and sprinkle a few of the
cookie crumbs around. I don't know about you, but my cat
     ALWAYS makes a MESS!!! <grin>

Serve with a new pooper scooper.

The following came from CompuServe's Cooks Forum. And, yes, it's a real recipe.

KITTY LITTER CAKE

1 box spice or German chocolate cake mix

1 box white cake mix

1 package white sandwich cookies

1 large package vanilla instant pudding mix

Green food coloring

12 small Tootsie Rolls

1 new kitty litter box

1 new kitty litter box liner

1 new pooper scooper

Prepare and bake cake mixes according to directions in any size pans. Prepare pudding and chill.

Crumble cookies in small batches in blender. Add a few drops of green food coloring to 1/4 cup of the cookie crumbs. Mix with a fork or shake in a jar. Set aside.

When cakes are at room temperature, crumble them into a large bowl. Toss with half of the remaining cookie crumbs and enough of the pudding to make the mixture feel moist, but not soggy.

Place a liner in the box and pour in mixture.

Unwrap three Tootsie Rolls and heat in a microwave until soft and pliable. Shape blunt ends into slightly curved points. Repeat with three more rolls. Bury the rolls decoratively in the cake mixture.

Sprinkle the remaining white cookie crumbs over mixture, then scatter green crumbs lightly over top.

Reserve 1 Tootsie Roll. Heat the rest, three at a time, in the microwave until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake and sprinkle with crumbs from box. Heat remaining roll just until pliable and hang it over the edge of the box.

Place box on a sheet of newspaper. Serve with the scoop.

The Brownstone restaurant, 2736 Virginia, has extended its hours for Sunday brunch on Father's Day (June 19) to 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The good news is that executive chef Joel St. John's irresistibly decadent Jolt Cake will be in the dessert lineup (recipe follows).

The name comes from the ""jolt'' of espresso in the cake and lush white and dark chocolate sauce garnish.

Jolt Cake "Seb's - New Orleans Gourmet November 1989 Trust me, this cake is NOT for the faint of heart. It is basically a flourless chocolate cake with a New Orleans twist. The flavors of both chocolate and coffee are intense. New Orleans is, after all, an intense city. If you can't stand the heat, cher, get outta da kitchen!"

Sweet treats fill the mailbag this week.

Margaret Mangiante wanted a recipe for Mountain Dew cake. We received seven responses, each a little different. We're printing one from Tracie Kehoe, who uses orange cake mix and coconut pudding mix, but others use lemon cake mix and lemon pudding mix, or yellow cake mix and pineapple pudding mix. Most say 7-Up works as well as Mountain Dew.

Soft drinks are right at home with a Labor Day meal, but it's a different twist when one shows up in cake. Dr Pepper Co.'s recipe produces a moist, rich oatmeal cake with a faint but distinct flavor of the beverage.

Dr Pepper Cake Cake: 1 1/4 cups Dr Pepper 1 cup rolled oats 2/3 cup packed light brown sugar 1/2 cup each: granulated sugar, unsalted butter (softened) 2 large eggs 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon each: salt, grated nutmeg (...)

Here's a prescription to help beat the winter blahs - a Dr Pepper cake. This is an old favorite that turns up every few years. The recipe for a moist, rich oatmeal cake with a broiled topping has a faint but distinct flavor of the soda pop.

1 cup rolled oats

2/3 cup packed light brown sugar

1/2 cup each: granulated sugar, unsalted butter, softened

More sexy cake recipes

Karen B. Whitmer, Richfield, said she enjoyed all the variations of the Better Than Sex Cake. Chocolate is her favorite version, but she sent still another recipe that she calls Almost As Good As Sex Cake. She said she prefers Mrs. Richardson's topping, because it is very thick and mixes well with the thawed frozen strawberries.

Cocktail peanuts that are not dry roasted look more appealing on the topping, she said.

Almost As Good As Sex Cake

1 (18-oz.) pkg. yellow cake mix

1 (14-oz.) can sweetened condensed milk

1 (10-oz.) pkg. frozen strawberry halves in syrup, thawed

1 (19-oz.) jar strawberry ice cream topping

1 (8-oz.) container non-dairy whipped topping

3/4 c. cocktail salted peanuts, slightly chopped

Prepare cake mix according to package directions. Bake in a 9-by-13-inch pan and cool. Poke holes in the cake with the handle of a wooden spoon. Pour condensed milk evenly over cake and into holes.

Combine thawed strawberries and syrup with ice cream topping and mix well. Spoon evenly over cake and into holes. Spread whipped topping over top and sprinkle chopped peanuts over all. Chill and serve.

If you can't have Redford

Dorothea Knauth, West Des Moines, Iowa, saw the request for a Better Than Sex Cake not made with chocolate. She said that her original recipe was called "layered dessert" but that she saw the same recipe entitled Next Best Thing to Robert Redford - Lemon Version.

Next Best Thing to Robert Redford - Lemon Version

Crust:

1 c. flour

1 stick margarine

1/2 c. chopped nuts

First Layer:

8 oz. cream cheese

1 c. powdered sugar

1 c. frozen whipped topping, thawed

Next Layer:

2 pkg. instant lemon pudding

3 c. milk

Frozen whipped topping

Mix flour, margarine and chopped nuts. Pat in bottom of a 9-by-9-inch pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 12 minutes. Cool.

Mix cream cheese, powdered sugar and topping and spread on crust. Prepare pudding by beating the pudding mix with milk. Spread over cream-cheese mixture. Spread with the whipped topping. Refrigerate.

Sprinkle with chopped nuts before serving, if desired.

She's honest. On page 188, the cake is titled "Almost Better Than Sex Cake" because, unlike its original counterpart, it is made with canola oil, plain yogurt and skim milk.

But for everything else, she promises, "you can't tell the difference."

Meaning that Holly Berkowitz Clegg's low-fat, low-cholesterol, low-calorie dishes are close in taste to the originals that are heavy with roux, cream and butter.

And, in her new and third cookbook,...
