Saying About Translation

There is a proverbial saying that translations are like wives (or women),
they are either beautiful or faithful.  Can anyone help me trace early
examples of this?  I have misplaced my copy of David Crystal, _Words on
Words_; if someone has this handy, perhaps Crystal sheds some light on
this question.
