TEXAS DIP--335 Google hits, 24 Google Groups hits

The dates here are kind of hazy. I'm away from the ProQuest LOS ANGELES
TIMES right now.
The first "California Dip" on Newspaperarchive is 1955, not 1954. The
first mention of "Lipton" is 11-29-1956.
"Towse" on Google Groups (below) is an ADS-Ler.

first printed on the back of the Lipton onion soup mixpackages.

Here's some interesting stuff.

"The true super bowl: You can bet it's filled with a dip or two" By Suzanne
Hamlin, The New York Times

In the article Hamlin quotes Pamela Stetson, director of publicrelations for
Lipton, as saying that there were no "dips" before some creative Californian
invented the California Dip in 1954.

The dip, apparently became an immediate hit, and Lipton noticed that sales of
their soup mix, sour cream and potato chips("crisps" to our friends on the
other side of the big wet) had noticeably increased.

Lipton tracked down the recipe and their foodies reformulated itt o mellow it
out -- creating a greater sour cream to onion soup mix ratio. They then
figured out exactly how much sour cream (2c) should be added to a single packet of
soup mix.

Hamlin writes, "Lipton estimates that an average of 220,000 envelopes of the
onion soup mix are used across the nation everyday, according to Ms. Stetson,
who added that sales are particularly strong from mid-November through Super
Bowl Sunday."I sure hope Lipton gave that mysterious California chef some
pourboire in return for millions of dollars worth of sales.

Where would we be without California dip made with Lipton Onion Recipe Soup
mix and sour cream? Until the dip was introduced in 1954, according to
Richards, sour cream was little known. Potato chips also saw an unprecedented increase
in sales. Everybody knows about the Lipton California Dip, including those
who will never learn to use another recipe," Richards writes.

THE AMERICAN CENTURY COOKBOOK
by Jean Anderson
New York: Clarkson Potter
1997

Pg. 24: California Dip
THIS MAY not be "the mother of all dips," but it is surely America's most
beloved. The Lipton Company, whose dry onion soup mix is the basis of
California Dip, doesn't claim to have invented it. That distinction belongs to an
anonymous California cook, who blended sour cream with the soup mix back in
1954--two years after it hit the market. Word of the new dip spread through Los
Angeles faster than a canyon fire, newspapers printed the recipe, onion soup
mix sales soared, and Lipton executives, a continent away in New Jersey, were
ecstgatic. They tracked down the recipe, perfected it, and beginning in 1958,
printed it on every box of Lipton Recipe Secrets Onion Soup Mix (it's still
there).
