Antedating of "tree hugger" (1965)

Another "tree-hugging" reference occurs to me: the line in the Tommy James
song "Dragging the Line" (about 1970, I think). My impression is that here
the hugging is to indicate love for Nature or some such thing, rather than
solidarity against the lumberjack.
