SOUTH AFRICA'S 10TH ANNIVERSARY & "RAPE TOWN," "GANGSTER'S PARADISE"

   The big news down here has been the tenth anniversary of South African independence from apartheid.  The singing and dancing was all over South African television last night.
   Both the BBC (Hillary Anderson) and CNN (Charlaine Hunter-Gault) did South African stories.  Neither story mentioned a single problem with the new South Africa!  The words "AIDS," "crime," "rape" and "security" (South Africa's fastest-growing business) were NEVER MENTIONED.
   The CNN story profiled a white person who first left South Africa, then returned.  He's happy now.  That's representative?  You'd think, from the BBC and CNN stories, that the end of apartheid meant freedoms about just singing and dancing.
    There's a reason for the slang term "Rape Town."  This is one horrifying example that has occurred frequently in South Africa and Namibia.  There's no buzz word for this type of crime, but there probably will be.  From the same NEW ERA, 26-29 April 2004, "Child Rape Incidents Rise at Tsumeb," pg. 14, col. 5:

   Namwandi noted that the village communities are faced with popular myth that sex with a virgin is an immediate cure for AIDS.
   She stressed that such beliefs amongst rural communities could be the root causes of the shocking upsurge in child rape cases.
   "I feel sick in my stomach when I think of the number of young children who are raped by these men who claim that it will cleanse them of AIDS.  But because it is such a sensitive issue with potentially racist overtones, people don't want to confront such issues," Namwandi said.

APPLE MOUSSE (APPLE SAUCE)

   "Apple mousse" was listed on the buffet.  It was "apple sauce."  My tour guide acted like "mousse" was a perfectly natural term.  What else would you call it?
   I've had Chocolate Mousse, and I put some on my hair, and I had a Passionate Moose once...
