Banker: payoff man of a numbers racket pool.

Blow, take a powder: to skip town.

Canned case: an incident not entered in a policeman's book.

Coffee sergeant: station house ahnger-on who runs errands, such as getting
coffee for patrolmen.

Collar: arrest.

Contract: favor, such as "fixing" a ticket.

Dip: a pickpocket.

Heist (corruption of _hoist_): theft.

Lammister: fugitive, from _on the lam_.

Lush workers: one who "rolls" drunks for their money.

Persuader: blackjack or other weapon.

Pie wagon: the patrol wagon.

Pokey: jail.

Rap: criminal charge.

Roscoe: firearm that can be concealed on person.

Sap (v.t.): to strike with a blackjack.

Schmear: case of little consequence; minor complaint.

Scratch: mention of detective or policeman in newspaper; also, money.

Shill: a confidence man's assistant.

Signal 32: radio warning that a man is armed.

Singer: an informer or stool pigeon; also, _canaru_, _whistler_.

Skylarker: suspicious character.

Skins: dollars.

Snowbird: a drug addict.

Sparrow cop: policeman in trouble with superiors and assigned to Central Park
to guard the grass.

Squeak: complaint.

Stash: to hide.

Tail (v.t.): to follow a suspect.

Thirty-two: period of thirty-two hours off duty (usually comes every six
days).

Tin: any badge of office; also, _potsy_.

Two-finger: to pick a pocket.

Well-heeled: armed.
