I had a friend in high school (mother from MA; father from KY) who would say "can you borrow me the loan of that pen".  But he was being facetious, as was his wont.

re: selling a duty
Buying and selling debt and contracts are important parts of the economy.  "Selling" a duty is selling a negative item in exchange for a negative payment.  It's that way on one side or the other of a double-entry ledger, anyway; we just don't notice it, because usually the transaction is binary:  the payment goes directly to the person providing the good/service.  It's the presence of the middle-man that changes the perspective.
