I took the "gimme" theory to mean that the original had been making use of an already existing folk song, or at least a more or less common expression. I don't remember that any claim was made as to Emmett's version's having "gimme." A. Murie [It wasn't Burl Ives or as recently as 1972 that my recollection is from: more like the '50s.]
