The NYTimes may have possibly borrowed the story from the NY Post.

30 May 1902 _New Oxford(PA) Item_ 3/1 (A very long article on the game,  otherwise called 'pelota')

  "THE GAME OF JAI-ALAI.[title]  <Snip> Only one enterprise...is really prospering greatly in Havana this season, writes a correspondent of the New York Post from Cuba."

*There was nothing at the end of the article to indicate that this story was reprinted from another paper.  There is also a reference to reading a description of the game in Pierre Loti's "Ramuntcho"(sp?)
