Barry found the  probable sports source of "A tie is like kissing your sister"     http://listserv.linguistlist.org/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0208C&L=ads-l&P=R3846  from 1954.

But, the phrase was known before that.  At least the basic premise, that "kissing your sister" wasn't exactly the "real thing."
