I've heard this often in various places, but I think maybe most often in
Wisconsin. The "we" can be entirely 'singular', used by an orphan bachelor
talking to his only acquaintance in private, and I do not believe it refers
to a notional family. It's something like an editorial or royal "we" maybe.
