American vs. European Date formats (Modified by Grant Barrett)

I don't know if this is any help in tracing the origin of either way, but German says "(I was born) am sechsten Juni" , i.e. the 6th (of) June; and (today is) der dritte Juni" the third (of) June.  I don't think "Juni sechste" --June 6th-- is even possible.
