>People in the US will say I was born on March 12, 1984 (for example) >whereas I
>would say it "I was born on the 12th of March, 1984".
I don't know if this is any help in tracing the origin of either way, but German says "(I was born) am sechsten Juni" , i.e. the 6th (of) June; and (today is) der dritte Juni" the third (of) June. I don't think "Juni sechste" --June 6th-- is even possible.
