The phrase "L-word" was around during the '84 election.  The ploy worked, too--only one state went to Mondale.

Geo HW Bush gave this an added twist back in '88, running agst Dukakis, by
referring to "the L word" in a manner that suggested that it was only with
the greatest reluctance that he sullied his lips with such a rude
expression.
