Why name "Madison" so popular for girls?

Speculation: because Madison isn't necessarily a name for girls. If so in part,
may it, speculatively, parallel an increasing (?) tendency of women to change
their first name, in some cases dropping their given first name (or using
initials), and using a second (middle) name, sometimes a family name?
