fundamentalism (OED 1923)

1922 _Chicago Daily Tribune_ 3 Sept. C11 (ProQuest)  In an open letter
published in the Congregationalist, the editor of the paper, the Rev.
William E. Gilroy, appeals to Pastor Philpott to be the reconciling agency
in uniting liberals and fundamentalists in the harmony that agrees to
disagree.  Editor Gilroy says in the open letter in addressing Pastor
Philpott: "If you can turn the tide of fundamentalism into channels of
love, and mercy and graciousness and humility, and forbearance, and
brotherly kindenss ... you will accomplish a great and needed work for
America and for the kingdom of God."
